←874 miles end to end→

Land's End to John o' Groats (abbreviated LEJOG or LE-JOG) is the traversal of the whole length of the island of Great Britain between two extremities; in the southwest and northeast. The distance by road is 874 miles (1,407 km) and takes most cyclists ten to fourteen days; the record for running the route is nine days. Off-road walkers typically walk 1,200 miles (1,900 km) and take two or three months for the expedition. Two much-photographed signposts indicate the distance at each end.
Land's End is the extreme southwestward (but not southern or western) point of Great Britain, situated in western Cornwall at the end of the Penwith Peninsula.
John o' Groats is the traditionally acknowledged extreme northern point of Scotland, in northeastern Caithness. The actual northernmost point is at nearby Dunnet Head. The point which is actually furthest by road from Land's End is Duncansby Head, about 2 miles (3.2 km) from John o' Groats.

The straight-line distance from Land's End to John o' Groats is approximately 603 miles (970 km) but passes over a series of stretches of water in the Irish Sea. Running from north to south, the straight line passes just east of Glasgow, leaves the Scottish coast near the Isle of Whithorn, then across the Isle of Man and passes a few miles to seaward of Holyhead on Anglesey. It then crosses the St David's peninsula of Pembrokeshire, and makes landfall again near St Just in Cornwall.

On the Sunday 21st June 5:00am Paul and I will be leaving Lands End and cycling to John O' Groats. We will be covering 890 miles and we are aiming to finish this in under 6 days (165 miles a day) ouch!

We are pictured here with our mate Josh Harcourt. He was a competitve gymnast but had an accident 4 years ago whilst undertaking his training. Josh is now permanently disabled . REGAIN provided a 'bionic bike' for Josh and this enabled him to complete a charity ride through Brazil last year.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Regain - The Trust For Sports Tetraplegics gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

Thanks for your support, please dig deep.! Rob and Paul

Big thank you to Batleys,
They helped out loads to make the BBQ a great success.

Team Bio's........

  Rider Rob Hare
Enjoy going out and riding my bike and now racing my bike.
Did marathon 2 years ago and died twice over. Run it for kent
    association for the blind.
Had been thinking of doing something else for charity and Paul
mentioned doing this for one of his mates as his son is in a wheelchair.
He had an accident training for gymnastics at international level when
he was a teenager. As soon as Paul mentioned it that was it chance to do
something for charity, and a nice challenge, I thought this was something I could do and ride my bike.
Rider Paul Smitherman
Paul is London firefighter based at Erith. he will drive the engine to some emergencies. He started cycling seriously 2 years ago so has only been doing it a short while comparatively. He is great Dad to Oscar 13yrs budding velo cyclist, and Robyn 7yrs.And has been married to the beautiful Sandra for19 yrs !! He and Rob intend to do the 900 miles in 6 days,
He was inspired to do charity work for REGAIN wwwregainsportscharity.com as his friends son was made tetraplegic (permanently disabled from neck down) after an accident while training as a gymnast on the national team. This was 4 years ago, Josh who was at quiz night, is now 21. REGAIN provided him with a bionic wheelchair last year, and Josh along with his carer and Dad undertook a charity ride for Regain through Brazil. Paul originally did a Regain charity ride in China 2 years ago and this kick started his serious cycling efforts.

Phoned the lads at 7.30pm and were just putting Bikes on car having arrived at Penrith!

Rolled out from the hotel from Telford 6:45am. Bit of a slow start, hard work to wind the legs up, and tired from the day 2. Paul and I soon got cracking when Mick told us the 8 strong Race Against Time team who we have been secretly racing since lands end were in front of us. Soon put that right by Warrington 20 miles later where Mick saw them coming out of Lidl's loaded with bacon and rolls. Stopped for lunch in Mick's cafe (Preston branch) right on the A6. Then it was stop start all the way through Preston. Then we pushed on against the first head wind of the trip up to Lancaster through Carnforth and on to Kendall where we stopped at Micks Cafe (Kendall branch). We were met with ham, cheese and pickle rolls which was spot on. Tea was not up to much though here. This is where the Race against time team were staying. We then girded our loins for the 14 mile 1400 ft climb of Shap Fell. This was the best part of the 470 miles so far totally awesome in the 24 degree heat. From there it was a mainly down hill sprint into Penrith were on arrival at the hotel we found someone (no names) had booked Perth branch in Scotland not Penrith (only 200 miles away). As we had already unloaded we decided to call it a day after 155 miles and 10 hours in the saddle and 14 hours on the road.
Later's Rob
