About Us

Welcome to our website, we hope you find it useful and that as a club we are able to help you enjoy the wonderful sport of cycling.

Many cyclists wonder why join a club? Perhaps you are looking to share your enjoyment of cycling with other like minded people, you may wish to participate in one or more of the many types of race, or you may be looking to improve your health and fitness levels. Hi,

I’ve just moved from London to Gillingham and I’m interested in joining a cycling
club. I have ridden with a few clubs before on a leisure basis but haven’t been on the bike for a while. Is it ok to just turn up for a club run on the Saturday and
Sunday to see what the club is like?

    Kind regards,

    Grant Baverstock.

    Hi There,

I’ve just bought myself a new bike to take up cycling, this is my first real road bike. I was an avid runner, although recently I’ve had issues with my shins and decided to take up cycling.

I’m a 30 year old male from Chatham/Gillingham (Darland area)

Just wonder if you guys do beginner rides with advice for newbies? I’m looking to join a club for the fun atmosphere.

    Thanks
    Luke

    • Matt Fearn says:

      Hi Luke,
Club rides are posted on the calendar. Advice gladly given and new members are welcome. A Sunday ride would be best, ask for Mick or Harve or whoever is leading the ride on that day.
      All the best
      Matt

Just found this site. my grandfather was a Medway wheeler and the club had it’s own club song that my grandfather used to sing to us:

Come and Join Us, Come and Join Us, Come and join the Medway wheelers
Come and join us, come and join us, come and join our happy band.

Please put a penny on the drum, on the drum,
Please put a penny on the drum, on the drum,
If we only had a tanner to buy another banner
Please put a penny on the drum, on the drum.

Come and join us, come and join us come and join the Medway Wheelers.

and the song repeats like that.

responding to the message from Alan Spore, Dave Marvel was my grandfather. Him and my grandmother Joyce used to ride tandem bikes for the club. In his later years he would act as a road marshal for the road races around medway and when on holidays visiting them, he would take us with him, we be sitting in deck chairs along the route while he was doing his marshaling duties, grandmother keeping her grand-kids fed with drinks and food :).

When the Medway Wheelers merged with the other cycling clubs and become Medway Velo, my grandfather Dave and his wife Joyce, my grandmother were some kind of admins for the club because i remember when club days came around, it was always them who went to the cash and carry up by Rochester to get all the food, drinks and other bits and bobs for the club house. I was never allowed in, i always had to sit in the car and wait for them to finish their shopping.

When my grandfather passed on, i was given his Medway Velo club racing jersey and cold weather racing jacket. They are treasured items and treasured memories of my grandfather and grandmothers time at the club 🙂
