| Saturday 1st March 2008 Well we all arrived safe and sound all the bikes in on piece too which is always nice. We quickly put the bikes together and headed out for a pizza since we had
all been up since 03:00 in the morning.Pizza digested it was back to the hotel to get kitted up and out on the bikes for 20 miles or so just to check everything was in working order and to burn off a bit of the pizza. No great shakes today just a very gentle 20 miles to bed ourselves in. Sunday 2nd March We awoke this morning to what can only be described as a perfect Mallorca morning, clear blue skies and a breath of wind. We headed out along the Bay road with an absolutely dead calm bay to our left and we knew we were going to be in for a lovely day out on the bikes. We were quickly into Alcudia and then out along the marshes road heading towards Sa Pobla, with Sa Pobla safely negotiated we were soon on our way again to Sineu. By the time we reached Sineu we had a notched up an impressive 19.5mph average and we only had another 25k to go before lunch. We arrived at the square in Petra to be confronted with probably around 150-200 other cyclists all wanting the same as us, food and drink. We managed to bag a nice table at the Orange café, so called as before you have even ordered anything they bring out a big plateful of orange segments to eat. Lunch was a very nice but brief affair and we were soon back out on the road heading towards Airiny and Santa Magdalaida before a run into Alcudia. Now normally we wouldn’t make a second stop but with the weather so nice and time on our hands we headed into the Port at Alcudia for another coffee and a cake for some. With a fair amount of people watching taking place I was as far removed from Medway as I possibly could have been. With the time ticking on we decided we had enough time to take in another quick 20 mile loop before home showers and food. 70 miles on the first full day, not too bad me thinks. Monday 3rd March With another beautiful morning to greet us, we knew we had to make the
most of it, but also aware that we had to meet the remaining 3 guys to
form our group of 10 at lunchtime. It was decided that we would take on some roads today that none of the other guys had been on, so we headed out the usual way along the bay road onto the garden road then the bumps road and onto the caves road. With all that safely negotiated it was onto new territory the other side of Buger heading in the direction of the climb up to Santa Magdelena, this is a 3.5km climb that rises up more or less in the centre of the island and has some fantastic 360º views of the whole island. We stopped up here for a coffee and a slice of cake for good measure and then headed back to Port d Alcudia to meet the rest of the guys. It was after lunch that things went a bit awry with a split in the group about who wanted to ride what. Several of the guys headed back to the hotel and the rest of us headed out on a reconnaissance mission in a quest for new roads as had been the case for most of the day. This unfortunately didn’t have the desired effect and we were soon all heading out of Pollenca on the way to the monastery. Now bearing in mind this is a 7.5km climb at the end of an already hard day I decided to become the official photographer and only climb the fir 4km and wait for them to come back down. Another 75 miles added to the clock today With that job covered we headed back to the hotel for a shower and food and an early trip to bed. Fingers crossed for the weather for Tuesday as they have forecast us rain :o( Tuesday 4th March
Well we awoke again today to clear blue skies and a light
breeze just to keep the clouds off the mountains.
The temperature had dropped a little so arm and knee warmers
were the order of the day at least until it warmed up a little.
The route today was going to be a fully made up affair as
the weather forecast had not been good for later on in the day so we
would make the route up as we went along.
We took the bay road out and then on to the garden road
pnto the caves road and through Campanet
and onto Alaro, from here we
picked up a tail wind and the speed shot up to over 30mph for more than
8 miles until we reach Santa Maria where we had to stop to refuel. The refuelling which is as much as a part of our training
as the riding took place in a lovely little cafe outside in the sun.
Today as seems to follow the last couple of days it was a long drawn
out affair and lasted the best part of 2 hours (well with the sun out
and a few chicas to look at who can blame us)
With the lunch stop finally over it was back home we headed
and it was to be a race against time as the weather as forecast was now
closing in on us fast and the temperature had dropped a few degrees.
We headed on though and back through Sencells, Sineu, Llubi
and then we headed onto some semi surfaced farm roads just to keep out
of the ever increasing head wind (excellent training for the up and coming
Paris Roubaix) onto Sa Pobla and onto the all too familiar Marshes road,
it was here that the speed shot up and the race for home began.
With the marshes safely negotiated it was onto the bay road
and home.
Wednesday 5th March
No riding :o( although we had always planned today to be
a rest day we were at least hoping to get a few miles under our belts.
The weather today has been the worst I have seen in 11 years
of coming to the island :o(
The bay road has at least 2" of sand on it and the
wind is currently coming in at 120kph and battering the whole of the
island even dumping a covering of snow in some places. Just like home
from what I hear.
So it is you find me in the bar of the hotel with a bottle
of San Miguel writing to you.
Salud as they say in Espana :o)
Thursday 6th March
With yesterday's howling wind subsided and also the covering of snow on the mountain tops cleared today was going to be a day to get some serious miles in. We headed out of Pollenca on the road to Lluc where we would tackle the climb up past the Monastery and onto Selva. Now for some reason that I can't quite find at the moment, I have no climbing legs and I was a full 10 minutes behind the other guys who had been patiently waiting for me at the petrol station. We soon descended Selva and through Caimari and then onto and through Inca. It was on our way through Inca that a stop at the top of Santa Magdelena would indeed be another great stop so off we trundled up this very lovely 3.5km climb. After the feeding and watering had taken place a quick route home was the order of the day as the temprature had developed a chill in the air. We took a few back roads that I know and headed back down onto the Caves road which we did in reverse for a change. A quick blast along the last couple KM's of the bumps road and we were all soon lined out and heading into Pollenca for the sprint finish. Now you haven't heard much about our daily sprinting activities but rest assured they still do happen and I have managed to bag a couple myself, including today's one. We got back to the hotel just before the skies turned grey and threatened us with rain again. Not a bad ride today 65 miles in total in changeable weather conditions. Friday 7th March Oh no!!!! Rain !!! :o( being quite hopeful it would stop before it got to lunchtime we all stayed within the hotel. It soon became all too apparent that the weather had other ideas and that owing to the dangerous nature of the roads when they are wet that we all resigned ourselves to another day of non riding. This has never happened to me before having to take 2 days off the bike in the same week, and for the boys who were only here for a week it really was a soul destroying day. Saturday 8th March Just as soon as the rain arrived it left leaving, behind clear blue sunny skies although a little chilly. We waved our friend off and set about getting ready for today's ride, it was going to have to be an epic one as we were so short of miles. We headed out of town and through to Sa Pobla where we picked up the Water Pipe road all the way through to Binisallem where we took a quick stop to look in the local bike shop Gomilla's With this behind us we set off for Algadia and then onto the climb up to Randa. This is quite a nice 5.5km climb to the top where you have amazing views of the whole of the island. We soon descended and were all in need of some food so we headed into the town of Lluck Mayor, where we found a perfect little cafe. Rested & watered it was time to head for home and we needed to do it quite quickly as the rain clouds looked as though they were rolling in again. We gave it some beans for the off and were soon rolling along in the mid 20mph zone quite easy with the KM's ticking by it was a refreshing change to have a tail wind. Then once again the heavens opened and dumped an enormous amount of rain on us and turned all the roads into ice rinks. A very kind group going the other way shouted at us to mind the roads as there had been an accident just down the road so that scrubbed a couple of MPH of our speed. With the roads now having been turned into flowing torrents it was inevitable that someone would pick up a puncture. This happened within 15km's of home followed very quickly 2km's down the road by another and then the final one came within 3km's of home. All ion all a very good ride today, we managed to squeeze in 102 miles with a rather impressive 19.8mph average. Well one more day to go and I will be heading back to the sunny shores of England. Catch up with you all later for the final instalment :o( Sunday 9th March
Well the day for the final ride had all too soon sprung
upon us but to brighten things up a little the weather had brightened
up a bit further and meant we could at least leave the gillets off
today.
We split into two groups today as a couple of the fitter
boys wanted to test their legs in the mountains. I didn't fancy
that so I took the remainder of the boys down to Felanix and onto the
climb of San Salvador.
There was a mighty head wind all the way out and we seemed
to be at race pace effort but club run speed for what seemed an eternity,
the wind had really done us no favours at all.
We soon arrived at the foot of the climb up to the monastery
of San Salvador and my lighter friends all shot off up the road like
scolded cats, they were good enough to wait for me at the top though
before we all turned around and took the decent back into Felanix for
lunch.
With lunch over it was a fairly straight forward run back
into home with a very nice tailwind to accompany us all the way.
We made the 35 miles back in a little over 1hr 25 mins
averaging an impressive 23.2 mph fir the whole of the 88 miles covered.
We got back to Puerto Pollenca with just 12 miles to make
up for our 500 miles for the week, but as known seemed too bothered
about baging the extra trophy miles we left it at that.
488 miles with great company on a great island what more
could anyone possibly ask for, oh, perhaps some constant weather for
next year wouldn't go a miss.
Any how's see you all soon
