Ben deploys his arsenal of skills

Milton Creek Duathlon

Two multi-sporters took part in Swale Tri Club’s Milton Creek Duathlon held at Milton Country Park on Sunday 28 October.

First up in the Tri-stars event was 9-year-old Medway Velo Ben Smith. Ben had to complete a 550m run 2km bike ride and anther 550m run.

Ben did exceptionally well in his first ever duathlon with a smooth transition and great even pacing in his run. Despite tough weather conditions Ben soldiered on finishing in 14mins.

Next up for the red, white and green was Ben’s mum Sally Smith. In the adults event she had to run 2.5km bike 10km off road before completing anther 2.5km circuit.

The first run went smoothly and it was onto the bike during which the heavens opened leaving Sally’s hands so cold she was unable to change gear. Thankfully it was over pretty quickly and she maintained form on the run to take 2nd place in the ladies race in a time of 50mins.

After she said: ‘It was a fantastic event and I was so proud watching Ben. Despite never having entered an event like this before, in my eyes, he raced like a pro. Even more importantly he was beaming from ear to ear at the finish – exactly how racing for children should be.

‘High praise to Swale Tri Club who put on a welcoming event for children to enjoy.
