Busy weekend for the MVC

by Sally Smith

Road racing and time trials have been the events of choice for 12 Medway Velo Club riders this weekend.

Kicking of proceedings were Rob Kennison, Jacob Kennison, Tyler Lemmon and Sally Smith who took part in closed circuit road racing at Fowlmead Country Park on Saturday 12 May.

First up for the team was Sally Smith who rode in the ‘Go Race’ novice event. This was 30 minutes of the circuit, followed by a further three-laps of the track. Despite being unable to keep the pace of the lead group, Sally hung on to stay with a chasing pack and sprint for the line which resulted in her being first lady past the post and 11th place overall (in a field of 22).

The novice event was followed by an open race for category 1, 2, 3 and 4 riders. This involved an hour of racing with 26 riders forward. Rob, Jacob (16) and Tyler (16) all showed impressive form and easily kept within the main pack. Three riders successfully made a break-away from the main peloton and took the top three positions but in an exciting sprint for 4th place Rob had the edge over Luke Anderson of Wigmore CC by half a wheel.

Tyler put in an excellent performance to take top junior rider finishing in 12th place and Jacob was hot on his heels finishing 2nd junior in 14th place.

Sunday, 13 May saw club and course records fall at the VTTA 30-mile time trial at Kingsnorth. The event was a club championship and proved to be hotly contested. With 10 MVC riders representing around a quarter of the field, the course was awash with club colours.

Despite the event being the second race in two-days for Rob Kennison, he was the first club member home in a time of 1:12:32, an amazing average speed of 24.8mph which was good enough for 6th place overall in a very strong field.

Next home for the Velo and setting a course and club record was the spin queen Louise Mason who completed in 1:16:25. This impressive ride equates to an average speed of 23.5mph. Despite being relatively new to time trialling Louise is proving be one of the top lady riders in the South East and is certainly one to watch for the Nationals.

Third home for the team was Rob Sapp in 1:18:36 closely followed by Colin Lukins in 1:23:31.

Matthew Fearn returned a time of 1:24:34 with brother Andy Fearn in close succession with a 1:25:14. Deborah Hope put in a good effort to take second lady in 1:26:56 with Sally Smith finishing just behind her in 1:29:33. Fourth lady was Victoria Strila who is showing ever improving form to finish in 1:34:08 from Ernie Mackey who at 72-years-young took the bronze in the club championships in 1:39:53.

The event was won by Andrew Meilak of Data Team Allstars in 1:07:57.

Louise, Sally and Deborah also set a new ladies team club record of 4:13:54 – an average speed of 22.3mph. Next week this trio will be travelling to Cambridgeshire to contest the National 10-mile Time Trial championship, they will be once again hoping to smash their newly established club record for the event.
