Midweek racing: North Weald, Isle of Grain and Dunton

The height of holiday season saw Medway Velo’s members continue to make an impact with the racing with three members in midweek racing action.

Lee Kingston was time trialling in the Gravesend evening ten, and came home with a best time for the event of 24:17.

Elsewhere Rich and Matty Stokoe made their regular trip to North Weald to compete in the TLI series where they faced another lovely evening with surprisingly little wind, and once again they had the additional bonus of racing against Movistar pro and Essex lad Alex Dowsett.

Matty started in his usual group and had his usual battle for the two primes with older more experienced riders coming second both times. He consolidated his position in his group and won the Sprint at the finish

Rich decided to try his luck with the fast boys this week, and although he was a little apprehensive before the start, the pace was high but manageable sitting in the wheels . The bunch was lined out a few times but Rich managed to stay in touch, even spent half a lap on Alex Dowsett’s wheel before he shot off to chase a breakaway.

Rich demonstrated his strength by remaining with the scratch group for the entire race and rolled home safely with the bunch.

After the race Rich was deservedly pleased with his performance, remarking “Scratch another achievement for this year to finish a race at North Weald in the fast group . Looking to consolidate that now and get a few more fast group finishes under my belt. Best average to date at North Weald too tonight: 25.8 mph.”

Thursday night saw Rich competing in the LVRC series at Dunton. This time Rich had a dig with two laps to go, holding on until the last bend when he was caught, but still rolled in with the main bunch.
