Racing at Fowlmead 23 August

Four Medway Velo riders raced in their various catagories at the PMR@Toachim House Races held at Fowlmead, Deal on Saturday 23 August.

First up in a hotly contested catagory 3 and 4 race was Dom Campbell, who looked strong and well positioned as it came to the sprint to take 5th place. This has earned him enough points to move up his British Cyling rankings from a 4th catagory rider to 3rd. So far Dom is showing great promise to be a top road racer.

The next event was the women’s race which saw Cassie McGoldrick (2nd claim) and Sally Smith forward. After three laps an attack saw a split in the field with 5 riders breaking away from the field. Sally and Cassie were in this group but a further attack saw three away from the ladies leaving the pair working as a two-up to try and catch them and also prevent the chasing peloton from swamping them. Great team work prevented them being caught and they closed the gap to 25 seconds on the leaders but the bell came too soon for the pair and they had to settle for 4th (Cassie) and 5th (Sally). Still a good result in a strong field.

Next up was Tom Kennison in the Elites, 1 and 2 event. This race was entertaining to watch, constant attacks, riders away and chasers blowing up all over the shop. Afterwards it was noted the first 25 miles of the race was completed in 52 minutes, an insanely quick pace. Tom found himself of the front of the bunch when an attack came. He attempted to go with it but sadly ended up shooting his legs off leaving him trailing.  Afterwards Tom said he shouldn’t have tried to go with the attack, however many would think it is better to try for a win rather than being another rider in the pack.  It was a valient effort and Tom was looking very comfortable and stylish for the first hour of the race.
