One of Medway Velo’s youngest members showed the older riders how to do it as Steve Smith, his daughter Safiya, and Phil Booth all made their grass track racing debuts at the CC Ashwell Spring Grass track meeting in Ashwell, Hertfordshire.
Racing in the under 8s Go Ride category Safiya scored a win for the velo in the dash, and achieved a podium place in the handicap race, consequently also appearing on the podium for the overall result. Well done Safiya!
Steve and Phil raced in the senior races which was brutal! On a tight 333 metre course which featured a fast downhill run into the finish Steve was able to mix it with some of the grass track regulars and he finished well in the 5km scratch and the handicap. Phil rode to the best of his abilities but suffered a mechanical failure when his crank came off as a result of the constant lumps and bumps of the track.
Elsewhere Dom Campbell rode in the Bec CC road race and although he missed the break he finished the race, which is commendable given the heat in which the race was contested.
