Sunday racing VTTA 15 and East Kent Cyclo Cross

Four Medway Velos pinned on their race numbers for the final Kent time trial of 2018 held in Brenzett, Ashford on Sunday, 14 October.

The 15-mile time trial, run by the Veteran Time Trial Association but open to riders of all ages involved the racers competing on the A2070 starting at Hamstreet, heading to Kingsnorth before turning towards Brooklands to finish within a mile of Hamstreet,

Lee Kingston was joined by Steve Smith, Rob Kennison and Sally Smith for the early start event. Despite the forecast threatening high winds and rain, the day actually returned favourable conditions and the event looked like it would prove to be a fast one.

First home for the club was Lee who recorded a time of 34.10. Rob was next back in 35.28 with Sally 3rd club member to finish in 40.28. This was an improvement of 3-mins to the previous year and good enough for 3rd lady overall in the competition.

However the Velo 1-2-3 did not follow the form book and the trio were left scratching their heads as to where the normally stealthy Steve Smith was. It transpired, like several other riders, he went off course adding on some extra miles. Undeterred by this he still finished in a very credible 42.08. Commenting afterwards 15-miles was too easy and he fancied more of a challenge.

Everyone enjoyed by the event which was won by Chris Fennell of the Independent Pedaler in a staggering 28.52.

Thanks to Bob Giles of the VTTA and all of the marshals and volunteers for running another fun and safe event.

Elsewhere, Rob Sapp raced the Velo colours at the East Kent Cyclocross event in Ramsgate on Sunday.

Racing in the vets category Rob put in a fine effort over the hurdles and zig zag lines to finish mid field in a race he described as one if the toughest 45 minutes of his life.

His son Ali Sapp raced in the under 12s event. He really enjoyed the experience and finished strongly.

Race secretary Tom Knight joined his work colleagues to raise funds for the charity virtual doctors at the Royal Parks Half Marathon.

He’s done some excellent racing on his bike this season but today he laced up his trainers and ran a great race to finish the 13.1 miles in 1.34.33.
