Velos turn out in force

Local cycling events have been awash with the colours of the Medway Velo Club this week.

A total of seven members took part in the Bill Philbrook 25 Mile Time Trial held in Molash on Sunday, 6 May. Torrential rain and, in parts, a puddle course failed to prevent an exceptional performance from Louise Mason who finished in 1.04.10 which was good enough to claim 2nd lady overall in a strong field of riders.

Next home for the MVC was Matt Fearn in 1:10:34 with Adam Mumford hot on his heels in 1:10:58. Andy Fearn returned a time of 1:12:31, Sally Smith 1:14:59, Victoria Strila 1:22:55 and Ernie Mackey 1:27:19.

In addition to the strong turnout and good results the Velo ladies also set a new club record of 3 hours 44 minutes and four seconds – an average speed of 20.1mph.

It appears to be the season for the women’s records to fall as the Trio of Deborah Hope, Louise Mason and Sally Smith recently took 8 minutes off of the 10 mile TT team record at the West Kent RC TT with a combined time of 1 hour 20 minutes and 41 seconds, an average speed of 22.3mph.

On Tuesday, 8 May four members took a break from the norm to compete in a mid-week duathlon held at the new Cyclo Park in Gravesend. Here the team of Colin Lukins, Victoria Strila, David Bellinger and Sally Smith completed the course, which involved a 3.5-mile run, 15-mile cycle and a final 3.5-mile run.

First home was Colin Lukins, who claimed 7th place overall in a hotly contested men’s race.

The ladies race proved exciting with a Medway Velo 1-2. In the first run Victoria Strila put a good 4 minutes into Sally, who managed to claw back the time on the bike leg. However it was not enough to stop Victoria who gave all in a strong run to take the victory.

David did well to complete his first ever duathlon and looked strong at the end despite only deciding to race that very day!

On Sunday team members will be taking place in the VTTA 30 mile TT in Ashford, the ladies will once again be aiming to put down a new club record.
