Weekend racing update

Following on from their excellent midweek performance in the club time trial, many of the Velo’s racing members were back in action at the weekend.

On Saturday Dom Campbell rode in the Crit at Cyclopark, which was run off in monsoon like conditions and perhaps a canoe may have been more appropriate than a bike! Dom followed this on Sunday by returning to SERRL action; however the race on the Winchet Hill circuit was abandoned following a Road Accident on the circuit (unconnected with the race).

The grass track riders also returned to action with Sally Smith, Rob Kennison, Steve Smith,  Safiya Smith, Alex Cook and Eleanor Lloyd putting on velo jerseys and travelling to Essex to compete in the Colchester Rovers event. Sally finished second in the women’s omnium and showed her strength by sitting on the front of the bunch for many of the races. Sally was also best women in the 8k race and finished runner up in many of the other events.

Rob finished on the podium in his 8k and took fourth place overall in the omnium, achieving top four finishes in many of the events. Steve and Alex also rode well with strong positions in their events, and Eleanor performed well on her grass track debut, indeed this was the first time that she had ridden a fixed wheel bike, but this did not show in her performance. Safiya rode in the under 8s omnium against a large number of entrants from the host club, but performed admirably and with real determination.

Two members travelled to the Thanet Way to compete in the Thanet RC 25. Matt Saywell was crowned club champion after taking eighth place overall in a time of 57:01, whilst Lee Kingston was the other velo finisher in 1:07:39.

Rich Stokoe also travelled to Essex to ride in the Region 9 LVRC Championships. In a tough field and on a new circuit for him Rich rode well to finish the event, in a demonstration of the progress that he has made this season.
