Weekend racing update

Time Trial Secretary Phil Booth rode the opening event of the Gravesend cycling club series on Sunday. It was a road bike 10 and his first bike race since last May.

Facing a strong headwind and short shower of rain for the first 5 miles Phil made steady work reaching the turn in 17 minutes. He took full advantage of the wind on the return leg to finish in ninth place in 29:40.

After he said “The first race of the season is always a tough one but on the whole the numbers were good and it’s good to be out racing again.”

Nathan Delaney made the step up to a 3rd category rider when he took on the crit race at Preston Park on Sunday.

The Velo has been consistently placed in races this season and his hard work has paid off with 6th place in the 4th Cat race. This earns him 4 British Cycling points which gives him enough to move up to 3rd Cat and opens up his racing options for the coming season.

Congratulations Nathan!

Sally Smith decided to pull on her Medway Velo running vest at the Mud & Mayhem Duathlon held at Thetford Forest on Sunday.

She completed a cross country 5.5km run, 14km mountain bike and final 5.5km run in 1hr 42mins earning her 6th placed lady overall.

Afterwards she said she would have liked another lap on the bike course so sure could have made up some more places.

Rob and Tom Kennison teamed up with Alex Cook at the Ronde van East Kent.

The testing course over 100-miles took the Velos 6hours 7mins. Their finish time may bit a bit longer as they stopped in Rye for a lovely lunch.

Nigel Wharton completed the Cyclopark Evans ride it sportive on Sunday which started in Gravesend. Nigel whizzed round the 50-mile hilly course.

Paul Thomas and his father Brian managed 30 miles of the sportive after three punctures led to the pair abandoning.

Charles Bruce took on the virtual circuit and raced in the Cat C VR crit on the social cycling platform Zwift.

This seasoned racer and dedicated velo was happy to finish 37th in the 35km event. Afterwards he commented “Not bad for an OAP!”

Many of our members give up their day so the racers can do their thing. Special mention must go to Velo Spencer Stacey who gave up his time on Sunday to motor marshall the South East Road Race League event in Wivelsfield.
