Weekly update 30th June

Five Velos headed to the Thanet Way A299 for the VTTA 10.

The wind was problematic on the return leg making it a real fight to the finish.

A impressive ride from Lee Kingston saw him cross the chequered flag in 22min 15 secs. Rob Kennison was next home for the team in 24mins 16 secs.

The battle for third club mate back was between David Mackey and Sally Smith with David pipping Sally riding 26.12 to her 26.44.

Michael Stanley rode a PB completing the course in 27.14.

On Tuesday Rich Stokoe raced the North Weald Crits. It was warm but windy and tonight Rich started in the intermediate group.

After a steady opening lap Rich found himself in a few breaks but nothing was sticking. He took refuge in the bunch to recover.

On the penultimate lap Rich made a break for it and managed to get daylight on the group before being reeled in. He rolled in with the main group.

On Thursday he headed to the LVRC at Dunton another windy night which kept the bunch together. There were a few attempts to get away early on with the eventual winner making a successful break on his own at about 30 mins to ride in for the win.

On the final lap Rich rode aggressively to move up the bunch and was rewarded with a top 20 finish.

Matt Nunn was in action today; swimming, biking and running the Olympic distance triathlon at Leeds Castle.

He swam like a fish, rode like the devil and ran like the wind to complete in 2hrs 39mins 5 secs. A very impressive result.

In other news Nathan Delaney was smashing it round cyclopark on Thursday at the summer series crit race. He took 6th place picking up more BC points. His 2nd cat may be a possibility this season if these fantastic results continue!

Crit races
On Tuesday Richard Stoke and his son Matty took part in the North Weald Crits.

Matty, who has not raced much yet this season, did well to hang in with the intermediate group for most of the race before losing contact and finishing well with the chasing pack, finishing 1st in his groups sprint.

Rich went into the event with a positive attitude and wanted to ride aggressively, he had a few digs off the front and managed to get away for a few laps before being reeled back. As the raced neared the end he went for another effort, rode clear for half a lap before finding himself in the bunch again. Come the chequered flag he finished well his group.

Nathan Delaney and Richard Stokoe both raced in the Thursday evening Cyclopark series on Thursday.

Nathan attempted to get into some breaks, but nothing seemed to stick. With 5 laps to go a rider made a break and rode clear of the field leaving it to a bunch gallop for 2nd. Nathan did well to finish in 8th place overall. Rich completed the race in a good average speed.

Delaney travelled to Cyclopark on Saturday to test his luck again. In the early stages of the race he managed to get into a break, but unfortunately the elastic snapped and he ended up taking refuge back in the bunch. With about 1km to go he decided to have another go and rode clear of the field to hold them off for 6th place.

Thanet 25
Matt Nunn and Lee Kingston both rode the Thanet 25mile TT on Sunday, which also formed part of the club championships.

Lee did a great ride, finishing in a swift 57mins 26secs, 11th place overall. Matt got a PB by over 2-mintues with a rapid 1hr 5mins 55secs.

Chase the sun
Rob Kennison took part in the annual chase the sun sportive on Saturday. The event sees riders setting out at dawn to ride 200-miles from Tynemouth to Ayr.

The challenge is to complete the eipc route before sundown, Rob managed to do this with hours to spare with a finish time of 13 and a half hours.

Bedgebury Enduro MTB 6 hour race
Cassie McGoldrick and Sally Smith headed to Bedgebury to take part in a 6 hour endurance mountain bike race.

They formed part of a team of two riding in relay to complete as many laps of the racecourse as possible in 6-hours.

Cassie took the first stint and was holding 7th position overall in a field of around 40 riders. She also clocked the fastest laps by any female on the day. She handed the baton to Sally who kept plugging away best she could, trying to not lose too much of Cassie’s head start.

The pair worked well together all day eventually completing 23 laps between them. This saw them placed first women’s team in the event.

Weekend update 8th / 9th June

Richard Stokoe raced to his best result of the year on Tuesday at North Weald Crits.

On a rainy and breezy evening he lined up amongst his fellow racers to do battle.

Weekend update 1st / 2nd June

On Tuesday 28 May Richard Stokoe raced for the Medway Velo at the North Weald crits.

He started in B group just behind the A’s. The pace was high with attacks early on from the youth riders. As the race went on he eased off the front with 4 others and they were away for a time before it broke down and they were reeled back in.

With four laps to go they were caught by the A group and we all rode into the finish together.

Richard finished 51st out of 89 in a fast race of 25mph average.

On Thursday night he raced in the LVRC Summer series in Dunton.

With a strong head wind on the start finish straight it was going to be a tough race.

The conditions and the circuit kept the bunch together for the whole race. He finished strongly in the bunch in a race that averaged 25mph.

Matt Nunn took to Leybourne Lakes for the Ocean Lake Tri on Sunday.

The warm conditions meant he took the decision to swim minus a wetsuit meaning less buoyancy in the swim but a speedier transition.

In a large field the Velo secured 13th place. Completing the 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run in 1hr 12mins.

Lee Kingston achieved a new personal best by over 9 minutes in the Kent Cycling Association’s 50 mile time trial.

He completed the course, which starts in Ashford and takes in the roads of Camber and Rye in 1hr 57mins 21secs to take 14th place.

A big thank you to all of the event promoters and marshals.

The group was swift and Richard placed himself well in the bunch. As the race went on he continued to hang on and even work round some riders who had dropped a wheel.
The pace picked up on the final lap but he finished strongly and made up a good few places at finish.

The raced averaged at 25mph and he was placed 35th out of 89.
